Sausage Rolls

I love having these sausage rolls for breakfast or for a snack! They are filling and low in calories!

Sausage rolls

I’ve had a love for sausage rolls since I could say the word ‘Greggs’. When I was growing up, I used to go to Ballroom and Latin American dance classes. While you’d think that burning all those calories dancing for 2 and a half hours on a Saturday morning would have kept me in great shape, the downfall for me was that my dance studio was situated above a Greggs. For those who don’t know what Greggs is, it’s basically pastry heaven. From corned beef pasties and pizza slices to triple chocolate doughnuts and peach melbas, this place has everything you could ever want in a binge.

During my years of high energy dance classes, my dancing friends and I would pay a visit to Greggs on our 15 minute break nearly every Saturday. Without a doubt, I’d come back with a sausage roll in my hand!

Greggs the bakers

As a whole, I think Greggs has always been a beautifully northern ‘thing’. It originated in Newcastle upon Tyne where I grew up and currently still live. Its first bakery was opened on Gosforth High Street in 1951, which interestingly enough was directly opposite the hardware shop that my great grandad owned!

Another interesting fact about Greggs is that the sausage roll is its best selling product, and they sell more that 2 million units every week! They also have launched a vegan range in 2020, consisting of the vegan sausage roll and the vegan steak bake. Both of these products contain vegan Quorn.

When you think about it, are you ever very far away from a Greggs? The short answer is probably no. With Newcastle being named the Greggs capital of the UK, and having 29 (yes… 29) shops, it’s not surprising that you’re most likely within walking distance of a steak bake.

Sausage rolls

Granted, sausage rolls from Greggs are slightly different from the ones in this recipe. Simply in the fact that Greggs sausage rolls do not contain cheese. You could definitely adapt this and take the cheese out if you do not want it.
