Toasted wrap

That’s a wrap

The sandwich was made popular by John Montagu, the Earl of Sandwich in the late 18th century.  The wrap, however, can only be traced back to around 1982 – it was invented by Bobby Valentine of baseball fame. He also owned a restaurant which served club sandwiches.  The toaster broke one day. He looked over and saw the tortilla wraps and made up a customer’s usual turkey club inside the wrap, rolled it up and melted some cheese on the top to stop it from unravelling. He named it a Club Mex.

Tortilla wraps are made from finely ground wheat flour.  The most basic recipes use only flour, water, fat and salt but commercial enterprises add levelling agents and other ingredients.

The flour tortilla comes from Spanish and means ‘small cake’. They were originally made from the native maze with dried kernel. It was the main food of the Aztecs.  They are very popular in Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine.  They vary in size from about 6 – 30 cm depending on the region and what dish it is intended for.

Which wrap’s best?

Lo-Dough bases are a alternative that I have recently discovered. These wraps are 39 calories each, so you can save your calories for treats later if you want! The only downside to the Lo-Dough base is the fact that they are only online. Personally, I like to buy several packets of wraps and freeze them so that I don’t need to buy them as often.

Lo-Dough also offer a subscription service, so if you basically live off wraps like I do, then this might be a good option for you.
