This is such a guilty pleasure of mine! I love a hot dog, and would have them in everything if I could! The great thing about this recipe is that it’s such a comfort food. With the pasta, cheese, and hot dog leaving you full until your next meal!
It is believed that in the 1860s a German immigrant sold the very first hot dog out of a food cart in New York. They were originally called ‘dachshund sausages’. In the early 1870s, an immigrant called Charles Feltman sold over 3600 frankfurters in one year. He originally gave white gloves to customers so that they could hold the hot sausage. One day he ran out of gloves, so he began putting them in a white bread roll instead. This was how the hot dog was born. They then became a very popular treat at baseball matches. Eventually, they became popular at BBQ’s and Independence Day celebrations. They were even included on a menu at the White House in 1939! They were served up to the then King and Queen of England during a royal visit to the US that year.
Not a Sausage
If you’re a vegetarian, fear not! You can use the Fry’s meat-free hot dog sausages. Not only are they meat-free, but they are also vegan friendly!
In regards to nutritional information, these meat free hot dogs contain 108 calories each, which is lower than the 151 calories for your average hot dog.
Who are Fry’s?
Fry’s as a company are very active when it comes to animal welfare. Their website had lots of interesting information and figures about animals that would have been saved if someone had chosen to buy a Fry’s product instead of a meat product.
Their range of vegan friendly meat-free alternatives does not just stop at hot dogs however, they also make burgers, seafood, snacks and also have a gluten-free range.
Not a fan of hot dogs?
The great thing about this recipe, along with many other of my recipes, is that you can switch out the ingredients and truly make it your own! If you don’t fancy the thought of a hot dog, why not try a regular meat free sausage? (Or a meat one if you’re not vegetarian). This would also be so delicious with chicken! I would however advise checking the calories on any alternatives that you decide to use!
