Shawarma kebab with chips & salad

What is shawarma kebab?

When you talk about shawarma, you may think that it’s some kind of exotic fashion accessory. However, shawarma is in fact made from meat that has been marinated and seasoned with lots of herbs and spices, and then spit-roasted for several hours.

Once cooked, the shawarma is slices very thinly and stuffed into a pita bread along with vegetables. The meat for shawarma can vary between goat, lamb or beef, however if you want a lower calorie intake, I would suggest chicken.

You can serve the shawarma with yoghurt, hummus, tabbouleh or mango sauce, however I have decided to make my own garlic mayo for this one!

But where does the name shawarma come from? Pronounced ‘chowarma’, it is an Arabic translation of the Turkish word çevirme, which means ‘turning’. This is in reference to the turning rotisserie of the kebab.

How is this vegetarian?

The shawarma that I use in this kebab recipe is from a company called Vivera. You can find their products in most big supermarkets (I got mine from Tesco). I think that even if I did eat meat, I would choose to eat this over others, as it’s so delicious. You can barely tell that this doesn’t contain any meat! They create the majority of their products using soya and wheat protein with vegetables and added herbs and spices.

If you are interested in other nutritional information such as calories and saturated fat, you’ll be glad to know that you’re definitely better off eating this version, rather than the one you get from the takeaway!

A chicken shawarma (so not even the worst one) can contain up to 500 calories and 1.1g of saturated fat. The full pack of Vivera Plant shawarma, however, is only 262 calories and 0.9g of saturated fat.

If you’re following Slimming World as a vegetarian, this product is a huge win. It’s honestly so delicious and tastes like you’re having a naughty cheat meal.

Another thing I like to do with my shawarma is put it in a wrap, like the picture above. This is a great on the go alternative!
