Picnic Platter

Hummus history

There is a lot of discussion as to where hummus originated.  The Greeks, Arabs and Israeli’s all stake a claim.  However, there is no absolute proof of where it originated, though it is likely to be ancient Egypt.  However, historians have found mentions of hummus in Egypt as early as the 13th century.  Chickpeas were a favourite food both then and now in Egypt and the word hummus means chickpea in Arabic.

The Greeks and Egyptians were trading partners for many centuries which is why Greek and Arabic food is so similar.  Both cultures eat lots of different foods.  All over the world, people eat hummus, in fact, it is so common that people don’t question where it came from.  Different cultures use slightly different recipes. Differing amounts of sesame, cumin, or tahini is used in different areas and some cultures use butter and other cultures use olive oils. In addition, Greek yoghurt and hot peppers are sometimes added to the recipe.

Facts

In some cultures, hummus is considered an aphrodisiac!  This is because it is full of potassium, iron, magnesium and zinc all known for their aphrodisiac properties and as a result boost physical energy.

Hummus is high in protein and fibre and low in saturated fat so you feel fuller for longer.

Think you could eat endless amounts of hummus? In 2010, the Guinness World Record for the most amount of hummus made was in Lebanon. They made 10,450kg of the stuff! Hardly surprising that it took 300 chefs to make it!

Which crisp?

You may have noticed that I use a pack of Snackrite cheese curls in this recipe. I purely used these because I know that they are low in calories, and most importantly taste delicious. I must say that Aldi makes great cheaper alternatives to your branded crisps. Taking crisps on a picnic with me is something that is an absolute must, so making sure I am conscious of how many syns I’m consuming at the same time has been something I’m always aware of.

Other alternatives that you could have if you have a few more calories to play with include swapping with a 13g bag of beef Space Raiders, or a 16.5g bag of Walkers Cheesy Wotsists.
